ORANJESTAD – An independent jury, composed of members Annelien Tromp, Carlos Albertus and John Wardlaw, are currently undertaking the difficult task of assessing candidates for the 2010 Shoco Awards of Excellence. The annual awards program, organized by AHATA, with its signature alliance partner Digicel, recognizes the ‘best of the best’ in tourism, in categories including Employee of the Year, Supervisor of the Year, Manager of the Year, Young Tourism Professional and Lifetime Achievement Award.
The 2010 awards, launched earlier this year, culminated in several strong candidates in each category, with nominees recently submitted by AHATA-member companies. The applications are now under review by the jury, which reconvened just last week for the 2010 awards. Over the next two weeks, the judges will continue to meet in closed meetings in deciding who will move on to the second round and be brought in for one-on-one interviews.
The Shoco awards were first established in 2005 to recognize excellence and quality service in hospitality. Each nominee from AHATA-member companies is judged according to criteria that assess technical skills, hospitality, leadership, self-development and community involvement, and entails the submission of documentation of histories within their respective companies.
Although AHATA organizes the program, and has received tremendous support from Digicel as the exclusive sponsor of the Shoco awards, the selection of winners are ultimately a decision left in the hands of the independent Shoco jury. Jury members each hold a wealth of knowledge of tourism, and of its foundation in customer service.
“The 2009 jury members — Annelien Tromp, a manager with Caribbean Mercantile Bank, Carlos Albertus, Managing Director of B&P Interface International N.V. Training and Consultancy, and John Wardlaw, a professor at the University of Aruba — are each uniquely qualified in their positions of Shoco judges and have shown the utmost dedication and professionalism in carrying out the duties of their important role within the awards program,” comments AHATA CEO & President James Hepple. “We are pleased to have secured such a prestigious jury, who are willing to selflessly contribute their own valuable time in helping us recognize role models within the tourism industry.”
The 2010 Shoco Awards of Excellence will be presented in a ceremony to be held this year on October 15. The AHATA/Digicel Shoco Awards Ceremony will be an all-out event in which award winners will be given well-deserved recognition and appreciation.

Welcome to the 43rd Bonaire Regatta and Festival We are gearing up to celebrate the 43rd edition of the International Sailing Regatta of Bonaire. The preparations for this are in full swing.
The Bonaire Regatta is an annual sailing event with many races along the rugged coast of Bonaire and Klein Bonaire. All kinds of boats, hailing from all over the world, participate in this sailing competition. Added to this are windsurfing- and freestyle competitions. Daily races in various categories are scheduled during the day; the evenings are filled with a variety of cultural and folkloric shows and band performances. The races are held close to the shore so spectators can easily follow them.
The Bonaire Regatta Festival takes place on the Boulevard and on the streets of Kralendijk. Stands with local `criollo’ food, souvenirs and handicrafts attract locals as well as visitors; they throng the normally so quiet streets during this time. International and local bands perform on stage every day of this festive week.
Visitors are urged to book their flights to Bonaire early, as the demand for seats to the flamingo island is high, especially for this event. For more information, please contact Tourism Corporation Bonaire (T.C.B.) at 00(599) 717-8322.
The entire community of Bonaire welcomes you to the 43rd edition of the Bonaire International Sailing Regatta 2010 and invites you to be part of a super week of fun.

ORANJESTAD – Bucuti & Tara Beach Resorts, Aruba’s premier resort for romance, has launched a new Eco-Chic Aruba Wedding Experience for couples looking to go green on their big day. Bucuti has been committed to sustainable tourism for more than 25 years and has incorporated both environmentally friendly and locally influenced elements into its Eco-Chic Aruba Wedding Experience including:
•A location on one of the “Dream Beaches of the World” that provides spectacular scenery, reducing the need for air conditioning and lighting
•A ceremony and reception at the same location, or within close proximity to limit travel impact and expenses. If the distance between venues is too great to walk, earth-friendly options can be arranged. A horse drawn carriage is efficient, romantic and it doesn’t burn gas. Group transportation can also be arranged.
•Locally inspired décor including centerpieces made from recycled wine bottles and indigenous flowers or cacti in terra cotta pots
•Do it yourself (DIY) indigenous favors such as handmade boxes tied with palm leaves
•Reception menus including locally produced, grown and organically prepared food; authentic local dishes can also be incorporated
•Authentic Aruban entertainment such as a renowned steel pan player, Aruban waltz dancers and a crank operated piano known as Kah’I Orgel or a Tingilingi Box
•Traditional Aruban wedding favors like the “Bolo Preto” or “Black Cake” which is similar to a groom’s fruit cake
•Programs and place cards printed using recycled paper and non-toxic ink
•Palm leaf confetti instead of rice, which can be harmful to wildlife
