Wat is Arubadag
Arubadag is de dag dat de Arubanen in Nederland hun eigen “Dia di Himno y Bandera” vieren(Dia di Himno y Bandera=Dag van het Volkslied en de Vlag). Op 18 maart, een Nationale Feestdag op Aruba, wordt op Aruba gevierd dat het eiland Aruba zijn eigen volkslied en vlag heeft.

Het was dan ook een emotioneel moment toen het Volkslied, de Vlag en het Nationale Wapen officieel geintroduceerd werd aan het Arubaanse volk in het Wilhelmina Stadion te Dakota Aruba. Terwijl de Arubaanse vlag voor het eerst werd gehesen in het Wilhelmina Stadion, werd de compositie van Padu Lampe en wijlen Rufo Wever “Aruba Dushi Tera” voor het eerst gezongen als zijnde het Arubaanse Volkslied. Het Arubaanse volk was dan ook massaal aanwezig om de Vlag en het Volkslied zijn eer te geven.

Arubadag zoals wij die vandaag kennen
In de periode die daar voorafging hebben velen Arubanen zowel op Aruba alsmede in Nederland hun steentje bijgedragen. De Arubadag zoals wij die hedendage kennen, werd in 1982 weer opgepakt door andere groepen Arubanen. Ook namen zoals Edwin Illidge (voormalig eigenaar van “Hooiberg Restaurant/Dancing te Rotterdam) en stichting C.A.R. en de laatste jaren het Arubahuis te Den Haag, waarvan diverse medewerkers onder leiding Van mev. Nuris Dabian er voorzorgen dat de Arubaanse gemeenschap te Nederland hun “Dia di Himno y Bandera” kunnen vieren.

De eerste Arubadag
De allereerste Arubadag echter gaat veel verder terug, en wel op 6 juni 1976. Het was in 1976 dat een groep Arubanen onder leiding van Mevrouw Rosinda “Dechi” Langedijk Thijssen (Tevens de oprichtster van de “Vereniging Aruba Isla Di Oro”) het initiatief nam om de eerste Arubadag te organiseren. Mevrouw R. Dechi Langedijk Thijssen was op dat moment geen onbekende met de strijd van Aruba voor zijn Status Aparte. Al diverse malen had zij bijeenkomsten georganiseerd met vele Arubanen in Nederland, zij bestookte tevens de toenmalige leden van het Nederlandse Kabinet met verschillende en vaak vurige brieven waar zij haar pleidooi hield voor de strijd van Aruba (Onder leiding van wijlen Gilberto (Betico) F. Croes) en waar zij welkomst commitees verzorgde om G.F. Croes en delegatie te verwelkomen op Schiphol te Nederland. Omstreeks 7 februari 1976 plaatste mevrouw R. “Dechi” Langedijk Thijssen een advertentie in o.a. de Nederlandse krant “Trouw” om Arubanen op te roepen om op 8 februari naar het Congresgebouw te Den Haag te gaan om daar de delegatie onder leiding van wijlen Betico Croes te ondersteunen. Deze was in Nederland om het toenmalig kabinet Den Uyl te overtuigen van het recht van Aruba op eigen zelfstandigheid. Hieraan gaven velen Arubanen massaal gehoor.
Het werd dan ook een groot succes en in een daaropvolgende advertentie waar mevrouw R. “Dechi” Langedijk Thijssen haar dank gaf aan de grote opkomst van de Arubaanse gemeenschap. Hier gebruikte zij al het woord Arubadag, die zij ook zou gebruiken bij haar eerste Arubadag viering te Amsterdam.

Zij was aanwezig op Aruba op 18 maart 1976 toen de Vlag voor het eerst gehezen werd en het Volkslied gepresenteerd werd. Bij terugkomst in Nederland, plande zij de eerste Arubadag voor zondag 6 juni 1976.

Hoe werden de Arubanen op de hoogte gesteld
Door middel van advertenties in de Nederlandse krant wist ze de Arubaanse gemeenschap in Nederland op de hoogte te brengen van de viering van de 1e Arubadag. Gezien het feit dat mevrouw “Dechi” Thijssen geen onbekende was in de Arubaanse gemeenschap, verspreidde het nieuws zich al heel snel. Zoals ze in goed criollo op Aruba zeggen;”Un boca bisa otro”.Deze eerste Arubadag was dan ook een bijzondere en unieke ervaring voor een ieder die daar aanwezig was.

Waar werd de eerste Arubadag gehouden

Allereerst was er de locatie: Het buurtcentrum Hofgeest te Amsterdam Zuidoost.

Op die eerste Arubadag werd er geen entreeprijs gevraagd. Al het eten en drinken was vrij verkrijgbaar op kosten van de groep Arubaanse vrijwilligers onder leiding van mev. R. Langedijk Thijssen.

Mevr. R. Langedijk Thijssen gaf een openings speech en daarna werd het volkslied vertolkt door de heer Pedro Croes op zijn gitaar waarbij de rest van de aanwezigen uit volle borst meezongen. Al met al een gezellige dag en de voorloper van de Arubadag zoals wij die vandaag de dag vieren.

Dankzij vele andere Arubanen die in 1982 de draad oppakte door opnieuw een Arubadag te organiseren en dankzij de inzet van het Arubahuis die in de daaropvolgende jaren veel tijd en energie instaken, kunnen de Arubanen de dag van vandaag hun eigen “Dia di Himno y Bandera” vieren. Oftewel Arubadag!

Maar laten we vooral niet de pioneer vergeten, mevrouw Rosinda “Dechi” Langedijk Thijssen die de eerste Arubadag organiseerde en als eerste de naam Arubadag gebruikte om de dag aan te duiden dat Arubanen in Nederland hun eigen Vlag en Volkslied kunnen vieren.

Comision ARUBADAG 2011

KRALENDIJK -At the stroke of midnight last night, all those on Bonaire said farewell to the Netherlands Antilles, and then welcomed Holland, as Bonaire, along with its sister islands, St. Eustatius and Saba, is now part of Holland as a special municipality and the three islands are to be officially called the Dutch Caribbean.

Her Majesty, Queen Beatrix, sent a telegram to all those on Bonaire, welcoming us into Holland. She wrote,

“To the residents of Bonaire: Today you, the residents of Bonaire, will become part of the Dutch polity. I would like to express my deeply felt solidarity with you and wish you all happiness and prosperity. Beatrix”

There are a number of festivities throughout the day to herald in our new political status, but one of the more popular ones will be the opening of a new exhibit at Kas di Arte with opportunities to meet and converse with the artists, as well as receive lessons in painting. The exhibit is titled, “The Kingdom of The Netherlands: Union in Diversity,” and it will run through October 31st, 2010.

Artists from Holland, Curacao, Aruba, and Bonaire will be showcased and the artwork focuses upon this new day and its significance for all on Bonaire. Participating artists are from outside Bonaire are Gustave Nouel of Aruba/Holland, Johannes Boekhoudt of Costa Rica/Bonaire, Elvis Tromp of Aruba, Edmond Tujeehut of Aruba, Frank Croes of Aruba, Wine Fransen of Holland, Ad Rooymans of Holland, Harald Vlugt of Holland, Yubi Kirindongo of Curacao, Ruben La Cruz of Curacao/Holland, and Karolien Helweg of Holland.

Local artists from Bonaire include Nochi Coffie, Henk Roozendaal, Frans Booi, Renate van der Bijl, Christel Cosijn, Sra. Verhoef, Manuela Winklaar, Jake Richter, and Sedney Marten.

Even KLM is getting in on the festivities by celebrating its long-standing relationship with the Antilles. This past Thursday, KLM celebrated its 91st anniversary, and, as is customary, they introduced a new Delftware house. This 91st house in the KLM collection will be the Dutch Antilles House in The Hague. In replicating the Dutch Antilles House, KLM hopes to reinforce its historically strong ties with the Dutch Caribbean as it was way back on December 15, 1934, when KLM operated its first transatlantic flight to Curaçao with the Fokker F-XVIII “Snip.” KLM has been dishing out Delftware houses on board since the 1950s. The houses are replicas of exceptional buildings in the Netherlands and the number of houses in the collection has corresponded with KLM’s age since 1994. A new house has been added to the collection each year thereafter on October 7th. The houses are presented to passengers traveling in World Business Class on intercontinental flights, and are considered collectibles by many on Bonaire.

ORANJESTAD – Castro Perez has been Eco-Tourism Manager at the Aruba Tourism Authority since 1988 and was recently decorated by the Queen of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in recognition of his efforts on behalf of the environment.

Castro has been the guiding light of the annual Aruba Reef Care Clean-up Project. The 17th edition will take place July 2010. It is the most ambitious environmental

-up of its kind, in which 1000 local and international volunteers painstakingly remove debris on beaches from north of the California Lighthouse and Arashi in the northwest corner to Baby Beach on the southern tip, as well as more than twenty dive sites along the southwest coast.

A certified PADI Divemaster since 1991, Castro accompanies the press and visiting divers all around the island. He attends regional environmental meetings and international dive shows, promoting Aruba as a dive destination. He was a member of the executive committee of WildAruba, the first national congress for the conservation of Aruban wildlife. Castro supports Aruba’s entry into the internationally-recognized Blue Flag Program, an eco-label for beaches and marinas aimed at raising awareness and protecting such natural resources as coral reefs and turtle and bird nests.

“Aruba remains superior in environmental awareness and the most organized in the region when it comes to clean-ups. To keep up this momentum, I would like to see environmental studies become a permanent part of the elementary school curriculum, emphasizing the importance of recycling and personal responsibility. But most of all, we should each take responsibility for the conservation of our natural heritage.”
