ORANJESTAD/MADRID -El uso de Internet se ha extendido a la totalidad de las fases del viaje (elección, preparación, viaje y post viaje) y es la fuente más usada y fiable, sobre todo a la hora de seleccionar destino y comunicar la experiencia de la jornada a través de las redes sociales fundamentalmente. Para el 85% de las personas, los amigos e Internet son la fuente de inspiración en el inicio de preparación de un viaje, aunque también tienen gran relevancia las páginas web del destino, según un estudio del portal Minube.com, la Junta de Castilla-La Mancha y The Cocktail Analysis.

El estudio Tendencias del Nuevo Viajero del Observatorio de Viajes e Internet analiza los hábitos de los viajeros españoles a la hora de preparar sus próximas salidas, lo cual, en muchos casos se realizará de forma “social” a través de Internet.

El Observatorio, una iniciativa de Minube.com en colaboración con la Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha y con la participación de The Cocktail Analysis como consultora, que incluye evaluaciones semestrales, se ha centrado en los cambios de comportamiento que el viajero habitual ha experimentado con el crecimiento y desarrollo de Internet.

Las principales conclusiones que se desprenden de este Observatorio sobre Viajes e Internet señalan que el uso de Internet se ha extendido a la totalidad de las fases del viaje (elección, preparación, viaje y post viaje) y se erige como fuente más usada y fiable, sobre todo a la hora de seleccionar destino y comunicar la experiencia del viaje, a través de las redes sociales fundamentalmente.

Durante el viaje, el uso de Internet sigue estando por encima de otras fuentes a la hora de buscar información. Un 55% de los usuarios acuden a la red para recabar información durante su viaje; el 36% de los que se conectan a Internet durante su estancia lo hace a través del móvil y 3 de cada 10 viajeros comparten su experiencia en tiempo real, sobre todo colgando fotos o videos en las redes sociales.

Internet se configura como la herramienta que ha cambiado el perfil del viajero habitual para crear un nuevo tipo que plantea su viaje mediante el uso de la red. Así, la relación entre búsqueda del viaje en Internet y la frecuencia de viaje del usuario es directa, pues el viajero más intensivo se inspira principalmente en Internet, mientras que el uso de la red decrece a medida que lo hace el número de viajes.

El uso de este instrumento ha configurado un nuevo viajero que va del turista habitual a un viajero que anhela hacer de su viaje una experiencia única y lo más personalizada posible, gracias al uso de diferente información tanto online, offline, oficial como social. Así, el viajero deja de ser un sujeto pasivo-contratante para convertirse en creador-configurador de su propio viaje. De esta manera, dentro de las tendencias del nuevo viajero, surgen tres tipos: el social, el planificador y el autónomo.

En el perfil social destacan las parejas sin hijos con gran presencia en redes sociales, blog y microblogging. El viajero social suele ser permeable a las opiniones de otros viajeros que encuentra en el medio online, gusta de visitar lugares diferentes al de origen y está abierto a nuevas visitas o actividades que surjan durante el viaje. Además, vive el viaje como una experiencia constante. Normalmente, usa Internet para exponer los contenidos de su viaje más que para hacer recomendaciones.

El viajero planificador se caracteriza por buscar destinos parecidos al lugar de origen y por viajar con toda la información necesaria. Está asociado a parejas con hijos y busca la contratación de un viaje cerrado. Suele usar todo tipo de información (formal e informal), pero es relativamente conservador y con una estrategia de “control” en sus actividades durante el viaje.

En oposición a estos dos tipos está el viajero autónomo, que desconfía de la información de otros viajeros y muestra mayor preferencia por las fuentes de información formales, por lo que su objetivo es más claro y predefinido. Suele estar menos dispuesto a realizar actividades o visitas que puedan surgir en el viaje y que no tenía previstas y tiene menor permeabilidad a las diferentes fuentes de información en cualquiera de las fases del viaje. Además, no se interesa por las recomendaciones de terceros y no socializa contenidos online tras su experiencia.

En función de su actitud, fuentes utilizadas y grado de apertura se han identificado estos tres perfiles de viajeros dentro de los cuales el social ha resultado ser el más frecuente (38,5%), seguido del planificador (38,1%) y el autónomo, el menos común (23,4%).

La principal conclusión de este informe es que Internet permite al usuario crear, comparar y recrear un viaje a su medida en todas sus fases, intensificando el papel del viajero como creador de su experiencia. Así, se convierte en la herramienta que permite compartir la experiencia en todas sus fases, ya sea compartiendo momentos concretos a través de las redes sociales o realizando recomendaciones.

Los promotores de este estudio destacan además que el sector turístico debe reciclarse para dar nuevos servicios a los viajeros. Los viajeros prefieren la experiencia frente a los servicios, por lo que buscan más contenidos que servicios tradicionales. Además, debe haber una renovación de roles, pues los viajeros buscan identificar a sus interlocutores como viajeros y personas que les sepan recomendar y no vender un producto.

Así, la figura del interlocutor en redes sociales se vuelve fundamental. Por último, hay que romper con la estacionalidad en los viajes y crear la necesidad de viajar. Los viajes no sólo se identifican con los habituales períodos de vacaciones, sino que pueden surgir en cualquier momento, y por tanto es importante estar presente en el timeline de los usuarios a través de las redes sociales.

ORANJESTAD/FLORIDA -I found a camera and Ikelite waterproof housing washed ashore in Key West, FL. Pictures dated from November, 2009 indicate it floated all the way from Aruba over a period of 6 months. Two months in to the journey, this sea turtle came across it and probably tried to eat it, turning the camera on and recording himself. The owner has been located in Aruba and confirmed he lost it while diving off Aruba on November 11, 2009. The last thing the owner did was take a video, so the camera was in video mode. This incident with the turtle ocurred on January 15, 2010. The camera washed ashore in Key West on May 16, 2010 covered in growth.

Based on time, I estimate this video to have occurred in the vicinity of Honduras. As far as we know, and having confirmed the date of loss from the owner, this video was made with absolutely no human assistance.

The camera is a Nikon Coolpix L18. The waterproof housing is an Ikelite.

Battery Life – The camera was powered by 2 AA batteries. When the owner lost the camera, it was either turned off, or the camera went in to battery saver mode and turned itself off. The camera stayed off until the turtle happened upon it 2 months later. Makes sense. The batteries would still be good, as apparently they were. Otherwise, this video would not exist.

This is not the best video in the world, but what do you want from a turtle? This shortened video ends at the point the turtle and the camera separated. The video ran for another 15 minutes, looking straight up at the sky with water washing over it. The full 20 min video ends, I assume, because the batteries died. There was still room on the card.

ORANJESTAD -On June 17th, 2010, the bird species checklist of Aruba was extended. At 6:50 a.m. a large bird was spotted gliding over the area between Pos Chiquito and Savaneta. Although the bird was at an altitude of approximately 200 meters, the chairman of Aruba Birdlife Conservation managed to take pictures of the bird with just enough quality to be able to identify it. After checking with the foundation’s senior advisor, Dr. Adrian Delnevo, it was determined that this was a first time observation for Aruba’s birdlife: the Turkey Vulture or Cathares aura. Dr. Delnevo informed Greg Peterson that this bird has never been registered in Aruba before, after checking all bird checklists for Aruba known to him (including his own). Thus the bird’s identity and uniqueness for Aruba’s bird history was confirmed.

The Turkey Vulture is a bird found throughout most of the Americas. It has a wingspan of 170–183 cm (67–72 in), a length of 64–81 cm (25–32 in), and weight of 0.85–2.26 kg (1.9–5 lb). The plumage is dark brown to black and it has a featherless, purplish-red head and neck; and a short, hooked, ivory-colored beak. The Turkey Vulture is a scavenger and finds its meals using its keen vision and sense of smell. In flight, it uses thermals to move through the air, flapping its wings infrequently. In the United States of America, the vulture receives legal protection under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.

OGreg Peterson, chairman of Aruba Birdlife Conservation, is very happy with this special moment for Aruba’s birdlife history: “This is a beautiful experience”. It also helps prove that we have to be very careful with how we treat the very limited nature resources on the island. The number of birds registered in Aruba is above 220 species and climbing. “Let us make sure we work even harder on our conservation efforts.” says Greg Peterson, “We have to learn to love and respect wildlife in Aruba’.

Miami (April 30, 2010).— May this third of May be a day of honor to the memories of all journalists fallen while carrying out their duties and one in which we express our most heartfelt solidarity with family, friends and colleagues affected by their losses.

Our thoughts go out to the families of the 26 journalists murdered and the seven who have gone missing over the past 12 months; in their names and those of all victims our efforts will continue directed at fighting violence and impunity, and in defense of the right every citizen to be informed.
In response to this situation, this Monday, May 3, we launch an extensive online degree course designed to generate protection and prevent attacks against journalists. From “The Extent of Organized Crime, the Practice of Journalism in the Face of Violence,” which is offered in conjunction with the Autonomous National University of Mexico (UNAM) and runs through the beginning of August, we expect reporters to acquire new tools which will allow them to become better professionals.
Also in Mexico, one of the countries where the press is most affected by organized crime, we will continue holding meetings with editors, based on our conviction that solidarity among news media will encourage the government to make the legal and judicial changes necessary to protect freedom of expression and press freedom.
Founded on this principle, we recently presented President Porfirio Lobo of Honduras with a series of recommendations to combat violence, since seven journalists have been murdered in that Central American country in the past 12 months. We proposed that the government seek an agreement with the United Nations, similar to that which exists with Guatemala, to set up an international mechanism to investigate and prosecute in cases of crimes against free expression. We also proposed that they create a specific jurisdiction to deal with offenses against free speech and press freedom, and the opportunity for open discussions among the three branches of government on battling violence, among other topics; similar to requests that we have made to the authorities in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru.
I would like, in addition, to highlight that in this period there have been significant procedural successes against criminals in Brazil and Colombia with seven sentences, one each in Colombia and Mexico and five in Brazil; and, to date, 100 of those responsible for the murders of journalists are paying the price, behind bars, for their actions. We will continue insisting on the need for countries to create deterrents.
Our faith in the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights to obtain justice remains strong and this week we presented two new cases involving Brazil, among a total of 26 submitted since 1995 and many of which have brought concrete results.
Despite our accomplishments and efforts in several countries, we must not rest on our laurels. In Colombia, for example, where the number of journalists murdered has decreased, we have identified 16 cases that have been shelved or suspended, in the hands of several public prosecutors’ offices around the country and with little hope of justice.
Between now and our November General Assembly, to be held in Mérida, Yucatán, our special focus will be developing strategies and investigative, legal and educational tactics against the affliction that surrounds the press in Latin America. We recognize the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation that generously supports our work.
